Member Famil Program: Augusta & Surrounds May 2024

Our latest Member Famil program took place on Thursday, May 9, featuring a tour of Augusta and the surrounding region. The event brought together a variety of MRBTA Members and staff who all share a passion for showcasing what the region has to offer.

By experiencing the local scene firsthand, businesses are able to become ambassadors for the region, confidently recommending activities and accommodations to visitors.

The day was full of exciting highlights that left participants feeling inspired and eager to keep promoting the special beauty of this region. Below are the highlights from the day:

Jewel Cave

We boarded our transport for the day and Mark, from Margaret River Bubbles Tour took us to our first destination. Chantel, from Jewel Cave, gave us a mini tour of the cave, highlighting its breathtaking magnitude. We saw towering crystal formations and intricate decorations stretching and suspended across the ceiling. Additionally, we heard stories of the now-extinct Tasmanian tigers that fell into the cave and perished.

Deepdene Cafe

After our exploration, we gathered for a morning tea at the great little cafe at Jewel Cave. The cafe offers outdoor dining on the deck that overlooks the surrounding Karri Forest. In the cooler months, indoor dining is also available by the fire. It was a beautiful place to rest and enjoy fresh brews and delicious scones.

Karridale Cottages & Hop Farm

We took a quick trip to Karridale and our next stop was the amazing Karridale Cottages & Hop Farm.  Olivia showed us around their cozy two-bedroom cottage made of stone and rammed earth, tucked away in the Karri Forest. One of the best parts was the Outdoor Bath Experience!  We followed a short path through the bushland, guided by lanterns, to a secluded outdoor bath. The experience can be booked for sunset bathing, allowing guests to unwind in the stone bath surrounded by festoon lights and lanterns, creating a truly enchanting ambience.

Glenarty Road

Just down the road, we were warmly welcomed by Sasha at Glenarty Road for a wine tasting in the alfresco area. Sasha guided the group through a little taste of Glenarty goodness and introduced their Fathoms Cuvee, which is ocean-matured in the depths of the Southern Ocean. The group moved inside for a delicious light lunch of seasonally inspired farm snacks and a spread of their charcuterie.

Rare Foods Australia

Heading back into town, our next stop was the Augusta Boat Harbour at Rare Foods Australia. The team was celebrating the inaugural placement of purpose-built wine vats to the seabed, and we were grateful to hear and learn about their new guided experiences. Tim shared the story behind the name, the sustainability of the abalone ranch, and the behind-the-scenes production. We were treated to an abalone BBQ and a tasting of their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon Ocean Series wines, which are aged beneath the waves of the region.

Seine Bay Luxe Retreat

Back in town, Judith led the group through her two retreats perfectly situated in the heart of Augusta overlooking the Rivermouth. The two storey modern, spacious luxury townhouses are equipped with everything you could possibly need and adorned with incredible artwork . These townhouses exude a cheerful, vibrant and colourful atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home away from home.

Hamelin Bay Holiday Park

The final stop of the day was the highly popular holiday park at Hamelin Bay. Becky led the group on a tour of the park’s beachfront and beach cottages, while discussing the conservation efforts for the black and smooth stingrays that can be spotted during the Summer and sometimes in the Winter months. This family-friendly park offers a wide range of activities such as swimming, diving, snorkelling, beach fishing, boating, and beachcombing.

Some testimonials from the group:

“A great day, so worth it to increase knowledge with first-hand experience.”

“Highlight was hearing stories of the tourism operators we visited.”

Thank you to all of the day’s hosts and for the enthusiastic participation from all on the tour. Our next Member Famil will take in Margaret River and Surrounds in September.
