Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse tower has now reopened after extensive restoration works.
As is the nature of a lighthouse, it’s significance and historical beauty, high on the hill and exposed to the full elements of nature, there comes a time when significant works are required to ensure that the light remains functional for all those that relay upon it. These restoration works included:
- The removal of all of the external and internal paints to reveal the limestone back to bare stone, from here the internal metal works, stairs and landings received some love and attention.
- The electrical system was updated and streamlined in keeping with the charm and mystic of the tower.
- After more than 116 years of service the balcony that has been the look out for both keepers and tourists alike was reinforced and strengthened as too the steel work of the lens floor that has been the access point and housing for the essential lens pedestal.
- This lens that turns every second of every day was stopped for a brief time to allow these vital and nourishing works to occur. In it’s place was put a temporary modern light, housed on a provisional structure to allow the function of the light to continue. Now that works have completed, the majestic lens will once again turn as designed from its first day.
This is only the second time works of this scale have occurred in its history, having survived direct lighting strikes and bushfires that is quite remarkable and highlights the steadfast nature of this lighthouse.
These recent works were of great importance and whilst we apologise for an inconveniences caused by the temporary closures of the tower, we are delighted that these works will allow the lighthouse to continue to be fully operational form many, many years to come.
