Press Release: Margaret River Vintage 2024 Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony

By January 22, 2024Uncategorised

With vintage 2024 commencing, the Margaret River Wine Association (MRWA) and Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association (MRBTA) invite their members and the local community to join Wadandi Pibulmum Elder, Dr. Wayne Webb for a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony for everyone who has recently joined our region to work the vintage in our wineries and vineyards.

The traditional smoking ceremony is used to cleanse and purify the spirit, body and soul and signifies the beginning of something new.

The event will also feature live music by local musicians, The Nomadics. The event is free of charge and will take place at Pioneer Park Amphitheatre, Cowaramup, from 5.30pm Thursday, 8 February 2024. Guests are encouraged to BYO chairs or a picnic blanket.

MRWA CEO Amanda Whiteland said, “Last year, we held this event for the first time, and we look forward to running it again this year. The start of vintage is an incredibly special time of year in a wine region’s calendar as the seasonal workers arrive, training and preparations begin.”

“Seasonal workers who come to our region are critical to our wine and tourism industry, the region’s economy and the community more broadly”.

MRBTA CEO Sharna Kearney said, “As we welcome the region’s newest arrivals, this unique event offers us all the chance to acknowledge how privileged we are to live and work on Wadandi Boodja.”

“Our thanks goes to Dr. Wayne Webb and the Undalup Association for offering this cultural ceremony, which was so warmly received by all in attendance last year.”

To celebrate our region’s multiculturalism, the event organiser encourages workers and visitors from other nations to bring a flag from their homeland to display at the event.
